If you consider renovating your roofing system, there is wide range of roofing materials at your disposal to choose from. It ranges from slate to metal roofing and cedar shakes. Your choice is dependent on the roof positioning (slant or erect), your budget in terms of cost and the skills of the building constructors in your locality. You also have to choose the design that is appealing and satisfactory to your taste; and also, the insulation properties and durability of the roofing material should guide your choice.
Categories Of Roofs
The desired positioning of the roof (e.g. pitched/slant roof) determines the roofing materials that can be used. A flat roof will also use a different roofing material. Now, among the categories of roofs is the cedar-shake which has a resemblance of shingles made of cedar; it is characterized by its environmental friendliness and durability. It has a life spam of about thirty years if it is professionally fitted.
Another category of roofing material (pitched roof) is called composition or dimensional shingles. Its raw material is the fiberglass asphalt/organic. It is the most common category of shingles in the market; it is cost-effective, durable and easy to fit. But then fiberglass shingles roofing materials are known for flexibility and firmness; though they are higher in price. The dimensional shingles are known for thickness and are more suitable for design purposes as they make the roof to look custom-made. They are a little more exorbitant but last as long as forty years.
Yet another category of roofs is the tile and slate shingles which are not rampant like the others previously mentioned; this could be because of the cost involved in acquiring it. It costs as high as 10* the price of asphalt shingles. Notwithstanding, both the asphalt shingles and the tile/slate roofing materials are the most durable. The slate roof lasts as long as a century if it is properly installed. This category of roof is weighty and need to be specially fitted, preferably by construction experts.
Now, remember that flat roofs use different roofing materials. Example of such is the tar and gravel that has the roof layered in 3-5 saturated felt. Tar and asphalt are placed in-between the layers while the top layer is composed of rock mixture or mineral.
There is also the modified bitumen roofing material used for flat roofs which uses fiberglass layers and having bitumen placed in-between them. This type is low priced and it is not resistant to strong rain or snowy climate.
EPDM Rubber Roofing Materials
There is yet the EPDM rubber roofing materials. This category is of greater substance and it is used in a lone layer over the roof. For this purpose, its insulation properties composition should be more. It is not durable and it has low resistance to ultra violet rays of the sun. There is also the metal roofing materials for flat roofs.
